A inicios del siglo XX, un grupo de trabajadores de una empresa fundaron un club llamado Maipú Banfield. El club no permitió la participación a todos los trabajadores y algunos de ellos decidieron crear un nuevo club independiente del primero. El 1 de enero de 1905, fundaron el Independiente Football Club, y el 25 de marzo, Arístides Langone fue nombrado primer presidente. Independiente inició la década de los sesenta con un título de liga, que repitió en 1963. Pero su mayor éxito llegó en 1964 al convertirse en el primer club argentino en ganar la Copa Libertadores, éxito que repitió al año siguiente. Nuevos títulos los años 1967 y 1970 iniciaron la época dorada del club, con la obtención de 12 títulos importantes: Metropolitano 1970, 1971, Nacional 1977, 1978, Copa Libertadores 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, Copa Intercontinental 1973 y Copa Interamericana 1973, 1974, 1975. En 1983 ganó un nuevo Nacional y al año siguiente su séptima Copa Libertadores (récord del campeonato). Además ganó su segunda Intercontinental derrotando al Liverpool FC en Tokio por 1-0. Su último título de los 80 fue la liga de 1988-89. Los noventa tampoco fueron malos. Ganó el Apertura 1994, y la Supercopa 1994 y 1995, y la Recopa 1995, por un total de 15 títulos internacionales.
Tras ocho años sin títulos, el club ganó el Apertura 2002. Su última gran estrella ha sido el delantero Sergio Agüero.

In the early twentieth century, a group of employees of a company founded a club called Maipu Banfield.
